Artist spotlight: A typical DJ biography lists a genre and starts describing the sound. Djrum makes that approach difficult. Felix Manuel draws from UK bass, breakbeat, jungle, ambient, experimental electronics and piano music, often moving between those worlds within a single recording. It is not unpredictability for the sake of being clever: the contrasts are part of the storytelling. Manuel trained as a pianist with a strong interest in jazz, and his early involvement in London’s bass underground exposed him to garage, dubstep, drum and bass and much faster club styles. He learned to treat tempo as something to explore rather than a fence around the music. After early releases including the two-part Mountains EP, Djrum issued the full-length Seven Lies in 2013. It placed detailed, atmospheric production inside the post-dubstep era without confining the tracks to one club formula. Later singles and collaborations showed how much space remained between experimental headphones music and the dance floor. His 2017 Broken Glass Arch EP on R&S anticipated an album that would bring a different instrument into sharper focus. Portrait With Firewood arrived in 2018 with contributions from cellist Zosia Jagodzinska and vocalist Lola Empire. Where earlier work often leaned on sampled textures, the piano became central. The idea behind Portrait With Firewood matters as much as the track listing. Manuel had been hesitant about sharing his own piano playing. Returning to that instrument allowed him to make music that felt openly reflective without losing the complex rhythms of his electronic production. The result blurred a line that often separates the club from the concert hall. A piano passage could carry the emotional weight while a breakbeat changed the physical momentum underneath it. That contrast became part of the vocabulary by which listeners recognized Djrum’s work. The road to Under Tangled Silence was not straightforward. During the pandemic period, a computer failure destroyed much of the material Manuel had been developing. Rather than reproduce the files mechanically, he reassessed the project and rebuilt the record. The album arrived through Houndstooth in April 2025, following singles including Three Foxes Chasing Each Other. The new work drew together piano, bass pressure and richer acoustic textures. That history makes the album an unusually direct example of artistic persistence: losing a body of work did not erase the ideas behind it. For a producer staring at an unfinished session, there is a practical reminder here. The tools can disappear; the musical imagination must still be cultivated.

The best house music does something a spreadsheet cannot measure. It gives a room permission to move together. Octo Octa, the recording name of producer and DJ Maya Bouldry-Morrison, has made that feeling central to records that shift between house, breaks, trance and old-school rave energy. Her catalog grew through the underground rather than arriving as a fully packaged festival brand. Early releases for 100% Silk, including the 2013 album Between Two Selves, established a hazy house sound. As the years passed, the percussion became more restless and the emotional stakes of the music more explicit. Resonant Body was recorded in a New Hampshire cabin after an intense period of touring. Released in September 2019, the album works with the rhythms of nature and the emotional energy of the dance floor. Its track titles—Move Your Body, Deep Connections and Power To The People among them—make clear that the record is asking for more than passive listening. In the album’s own release notes, Bouldry-Morrison describes dance music as a communal means of connection and healing. The production is lively and physical, but the perspective is deliberately personal. That combination explains why her work resonates with listeners who want joy without pretending the world outside the party disappears. In 2019, Octo Octa and fellow DJ Eris Drew launched T4T LUV NRG, expanding a party concept into a record label. Its debut release was an Eris Drew mixtape, followed by Octo Octa’s Resonant Body. They also shared stages and later recorded a collaborative fabric mix, demonstrating the same musical exchange in a different format. The label has a distinctive point of view, but it also does the ordinary hard work of an independent imprint: presenting music, organizing physical releases and helping other people find an audience. The larger lesson is that a DJ can help shape a scene rather than only pass through it. Octo Octa continued to extend that sound through releases such as the 2023 Dreams of a Dancefloor EP. Its combination of house, trance, acid and breakbeat supports a central theme of her work: styles can mix freely when the emotional purpose of a set remains clear. For bedroom DJs, the important takeaway is not to copy a particular retro drum sound. It is to have something you want the audience to experience. Octo Octa’s records offer a map from experimentation to a recognizable artistic voice—and from an individual voice to a shared space for people to dance.

Sam Alfred is part of a younger generation of Australian electronic producers treating the dance floor as an experimental space rather than a formula. Based in Melbourne, also known as Naarm, he works across house, techno and garage, with tracks that balance forceful drums and warmer musical ideas. His momentum came from releases and sets before the wider music industry began describing him as an act to watch. The approach is audible in how the records move. A sharp rhythm can sit beside an expansive chord, and a familiar house groove can accelerate toward something more urgent. Rather than depend on a giant vocal refrain, the arrangements are designed to create a feeling gradually, an approach that offers working DJs useful tools for the middle as well as the peak of a set. His Suzuka EP arrived through Gallery Recordings on April 14, 2023, with four tracks: Suzuka, Salzburg, Aucklands Groove and Lovin U. The label described it as a collection made for charged dance floors and release from everyday pressure. The EP also received a vinyl issue, a meaningful step for a producer whose music was becoming part of selectors’ record bags. Alfred followed with further releases, including Forward Step and the 2025 Backwards Step EP. The names suggest movement in opposite directions, but the catalog shows steady artistic development. His Bandcamp archive documents a sequence of projects rather than a lone track that suddenly appeared online. That sustained output helped listeners understand the sound beyond one viral clip. In April 2025, Australian broadcaster triple j Unearthed published an interview with Alfred filmed backstage at Party in the Paddock, ahead of his sold-out Australian tour. The conversation addressed how he prepares a festival set and what he considers when making music for large dance floors. Featured tracks included Suzuka and I Want You To Know, his collaboration with Kyle Starkey. That public interview is more valuable than an unverified story about overnight success. It shows the developing relationship between studio decisions and the practical task of presenting music to different crowds. A recorded track can be refined over weeks, while a live set needs to work with the energy and attention of the people in the room. In September 2026, DJ Mag reported that Alfred had announced No More, a five-track EP scheduled for October 30 on Technicolour, a Ninja Tune imprint. The planned record included work with Luuk van Dijk on Connected By Light. At the time of this profile, the release had been announced but its scheduled date had not yet arrived. The announcement placed his work in the orbit of an internationally respected independent electronic label. His career is still in progress, which is part of the appeal. The story is not about celebrating one unquestionable classic decades later. It is about a producer developing a recognizable language while new doors open: records, touring, radio support and opportunities for collaboration. For bedroom DJs, the useful example is the sequence of work it took to reach that point.
