Armin van Buuren →

In June 2001, Armin van Buuren broadcast the first episode of A State of Trance. What began as a radio show for the discovery of records grew into a gathering place for listeners, DJs and producers who wanted to follow trance as it developed. A weekly audience could become part of the story without needing to attend a large festival or live in the same country. The concept expanded into mix albums, branded events and festivals. By the time of the 700th episode in 2015, the program had inspired celebrations in multiple countries. The scale is impressive, but the underlying idea is surprisingly ordinary: keep showing up, bring new music and invite listeners to return. For a bedroom DJ building a following, that may be the most useful part of this career. Van Buuren was also making recordings that became familiar to several generations of trance fans. Early titles including Blue Fear and Communication led into albums such as 76, Shivers, Imagine, Mirage and Intense. The studio work ranged from long melodic journeys to accessible collaborations without severing the connection to the dance floor. His official biography identifies creativity and a willingness to move beyond a single style as part of his musical outlook. A radio audience may hear a DJ curate other people’s records; the artist’s original productions make a separate argument about what he wants to add to the genre. Both activities helped shape his reputation. In 2003, van Buuren joined Maykel Piron and David Lewis to found Armada Music. The company grew into a network of imprints and artist releases, giving emerging producers a route into a larger electronic-music ecosystem. The A State of Trance name also appeared across recordings and events, transforming a weekly broadcast into a long-running cultural institution. There is a business lesson here as well as a musical one. A successful DJ can promote individual nights, but building a label and a dependable platform creates opportunities for other musicians. Armada and the A State of Trance ecosystem made the project larger than the career of one performer. On January 12, 2024, Armada released Breathe In, identified as van Buuren’s ninth studio album. Following Feel Again, the album was developed after the pandemic disruptions and emphasized connection, optimism and the experience of returning to shared dance floors. Its tracks brought together collaborators including Goodboys, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1 and Vini Vici. The 2024 A State of Trance Ibiza collection likewise moved across beach music, club music and faster trance rather than pretending every listener wanted the same intensity. Across more than two decades, the constant has been a commitment to sharing records with an audience. That endurance explains why Armin van Buuren’s story belongs as much to the history of broadcasting and communities as to the history of famous DJs.

Dom Dolla — artist photograph

Dom Dolla →

Dom Dolla's career makes a useful case study in how a house record becomes an entertainment operation. The Melbourne-raised producer broke through internationally with Take It and San Frandisco, records that moved from DJ sets into broader music culture. Collaborations, remixes and years of touring followed. In September 2026 he headlined a reported 60,000-capacity show at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium—a night that required far more than a DJ and a USB stick. The DJ Hangout examined the promoters, production systems and ticket economics behind that event. The larger story is the infrastructure needed when a club artist becomes a stadium draw.

Miss Monique →

Miss Monique built a worldwide following from something many DJs once treated as a side project: carefully produced online sets. Raised in Kyiv, the Ukrainian artist had spent years developing her sound and filmed mixes before those broadcasts attracted a much larger audience. Her Siona Records label became an outlet for progressive and melodic dance music, while tracks such as Veselka carried personal meaning. She has spoken about completing that record in Kyiv before leaving Ukraine because of the war. Now based in Lisbon, she remains connected to her country through the music and the audiences that follow it.
