Artist spotlight: Durban gave electronic dance music a fiercely distinctive rhythmic language: gqom. DJ Lag helped carry that sound from South African parties into international listening rooms. Gqom's spare, asymmetrical drums can feel unfamiliar to listeners raised on conventional four-on-the-floor house, but the dance-floor logic is powerful. DJ Lag's releases and international bookings have helped connect the Durban sound to producers and audiences across club music. He has also spoken publicly about the earlier tracks that shaped the genre. That history matters. A local scene shouldn't have to lose the name of its hometown just because the records travel.
