Artist spotlight: In June 2001, Armin van Buuren broadcast the first episode of A State of Trance. What began as a radio show for the discovery of records grew into a gathering place for listeners, DJs and producers who wanted to follow trance as it developed. A weekly audience could become part of the story without needing to attend a large festival or live in the same country. The concept expanded into mix albums, branded events and festivals. By the time of the 700th episode in 2015, the program had inspired celebrations in multiple countries. The scale is impressive, but the underlying idea is surprisingly ordinary: keep showing up, bring new music and invite listeners to return. For a bedroom DJ building a following, that may be the most useful part of this career. Van Buuren was also making recordings that became familiar to several generations of trance fans. Early titles including Blue Fear and Communication led into albums such as 76, Shivers, Imagine, Mirage and Intense. The studio work ranged from long melodic journeys to accessible collaborations without severing the connection to the dance floor. His official biography identifies creativity and a willingness to move beyond a single style as part of his musical outlook. A radio audience may hear a DJ curate other people’s records; the artist’s original productions make a separate argument about what he wants to add to the genre. Both activities helped shape his reputation. In 2003, van Buuren joined Maykel Piron and David Lewis to found Armada Music. The company grew into a network of imprints and artist releases, giving emerging producers a route into a larger electronic-music ecosystem. The A State of Trance name also appeared across recordings and events, transforming a weekly broadcast into a long-running cultural institution. There is a business lesson here as well as a musical one. A successful DJ can promote individual nights, but building a label and a dependable platform creates opportunities for other musicians. Armada and the A State of Trance ecosystem made the project larger than the career of one performer. On January 12, 2024, Armada released Breathe In, identified as van Buuren’s ninth studio album. Following Feel Again, the album was developed after the pandemic disruptions and emphasized connection, optimism and the experience of returning to shared dance floors. Its tracks brought together collaborators including Goodboys, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1 and Vini Vici. The 2024 A State of Trance Ibiza collection likewise moved across beach music, club music and faster trance rather than pretending every listener wanted the same intensity. Across more than two decades, the constant has been a commitment to sharing records with an audience. That endurance explains why Armin van Buuren’s story belongs as much to the history of broadcasting and communities as to the history of famous DJs.

Cosmic Gate →

Long before dance music was organized by streaming playlists, a record had to announce itself across a club sound system. Cosmic Gate emerged in Germany at the end of the 1990s as a partnership between Nic Chagall and Stefan Bossems, better known as Bossi. Tracks including Exploration of Space and Fire Wire became associated with an energetic strain of trance that spoke directly to packed European dance floors. That beginning was forceful, but it was not the whole story. Many acts are permanently identified with the moment they broke through. Cosmic Gate kept making new records even as the genre developed a more melodic, vocal and progressive vocabulary. Their career offers the unusual example of a successful electronic duo that refused to treat an early sound as a fixed formula. The partnership expanded through albums, international appearances and the Wake Your Mind brand, which developed into a radio program and recording identity. They earned a Grammy nomination while continuing to travel as performing DJs, connecting studio experiments to actual rooms. The project was never simply about repeating an old anthem at a festival. Their public interviews describe a working relationship shaped by the practical realities of touring: road-testing tracks, hearing audiences react and looking for ways to issue finished music without waiting years between large album projects. For a new producer, that cycle is worth studying. The crowd does not have to write the music, but its reaction can reveal what a new idea actually does. In February 2026, Cosmic Gate issued Perspectives through Wake Your Mind Records and Black Hole Recordings. The release brought together three EP installments and additional music, including Bloom with Pretty Pink. Its arrangements draw on trance, progressive house and melodic electronic production, but preserve the dramatic builds and emotionally direct melodies associated with the duo. Speaking to DJ LIFE in March 2026, Bossi explained that releasing the material in chapters helped them work around touring commitments. He also welcomed the blurring of rigid genre lines. The title Perspectives was therefore more than packaging: it reflected the idea of approaching modern trance from several angles without abandoning the recognizable musical center. At the time of that interview, Cosmic Gate were already testing more new music on their American tour dates. The release cycle had become an ongoing conversation between studio and stage rather than a single event. That is a useful distinction for DJs who believe every project must wait until it is completely finished before an audience hears any part of it. The early club hits and the later progressive releases belong to the same artist story. Their connection is not an identical kick drum or tempo; it is the emotional tension and release that fans recognize. Cosmic Gate demonstrate how performers can keep an artistic identity across eras without pretending electronic music stopped changing after their first successful record.
