CHAPTER 01
The artist and musical direction
Thelem is a bass producer and DJ whose official label profile identifies influences from hip-hop, grime, drum and bass and artists such as Paradox. The resulting style focuses on deep low frequencies, rhythmic variation and spare, dark atmosphere. It is rooted in the tradition of underground dubstep rather than the idea that every bass record should have a maximal drop.
CHAPTER 02
Key releases and connections
The project has received support from selectors including Youngsta, Distance and Chef, with recordings played on Rinse FM. The artist biography documents vinyl releases through New Moon, Loft Party and Orientis as well as activity on Rood.FM, giving a connection to radio and record-label culture.
CHAPTER 03
Listening and live context
For DJs working in smaller rooms, this form of minimal bass can be particularly effective because careful spacing makes the sub frequencies carry the energy. A profile of Thelem also helps preserve the history of selector-driven scenes that developed through dubplates, radio broadcasts and repeated club nights.
