CHAPTER 01
The route through guitar and Boston
Smigonaut is the project of musician Josh Kipersztok, whose path into bass production included playing guitar and studying at Berklee College of Music. He developed his work in the New England electronic scene, where festival appearances and independent releases gave the project an early audience. His career did not begin with a viral moment; the music grew through years of local shows and experimentation.
The artist’s biography describes electronic compositions that take rhythm from jazz and hip-hop while retaining the physical scale of bass music. That mixture makes the productions more than a showcase of sound-design tricks. A drum pattern may shift unexpectedly, but the changes remain connected to a musical idea rather than an attempt to overwhelm the listener.
CHAPTER 02
Antithesis and the move west
From 2014 to 2020, Smigonaut built a regional performance history and received a 2020 Boston Music Awards nomination in the dance/electronic category. He relocated to Los Angeles in 2021, widening his touring opportunities. The following year, his debut album Antithesis arrived through The Rust Music and became an important reference point in the catalogue.
Antithesis moves between uptempo and downtempo bass music, allowing careful listening and dance-floor movement to coexist. Later the artist expanded into GUNK, a collaboration with producer David Westbom that he describes as a project specifically focused on glitch hop for the dance floor. Keeping the partnership distinct shows how different performance contexts can shape the same musician’s creative work.
CHAPTER 03
Why the live partnership matters
The artist’s public site lists performances across the United States and support slots with KOAN Sound, Jade Cicada, Kursa and Spoonbill. Those connections locate him within a community that values unusual timbres and musical detail. Smigonaut has also described plans around educational content and sample packs, extending the production philosophy beyond finished tracks.
A November 20 Asheville show paired Mindex, Ooga and Smigonaut on the same official billing in The DJ Hangout Shows database. It offers a clear example of that community in practice: experimental music connected through collaborative scenes rather than chart position alone. For listeners curious about unconventional bass, Smigonaut is an artist whose recorded output is worth exploring before and after a live event.
