CHAPTER 01
An imagination shaped by early electronic sounds
Schmoop is the project of American electronic producer Will Russek. His official biography describes a fascination with the sound worlds of early video games, which grew into an interest in bass production and a much wider set of rhythms. Gritty textures, boom-bap grooves and intricate percussion became recurring elements, but the recordings also make space for downtempo listening, glitch-hop and faster breakbeats.
A Schmoop track may feel playful while being meticulously structured. There is a difference between random distortion and sound design that is intentionally surprising. Small rhythmic edits, irregular bass movement and brief stretches of calm help keep the listener engaged without relying entirely on extreme volume. For DJs, those details can provide ways to build tension within a set.
CHAPTER 02
A catalog with a traceable progression
His first official Schmoop single, Charge / Get Back, appeared in 2018 with a pronounced hip-hop and halftime influence. Focal Point followed in September 2020, combining glitch-hop, downtempo and IDM. That four-track EP includes Gnomad, a collaboration with Jade Cicada, connecting two artists whose bass-production paths have crossed in the same independent scene.
The 2022 Collapse EP brought another change in styles and tempos. On August 18, 2025, Schmoop released the four-track Afterglow EP, including Afterglow, Kintsugi, Haymaker and Converge. Its official description highlights the influence of drum and bass and jungle alongside the familiar glitch-hop sound. These albums give listeners a clear way to hear development rather than interpreting a single remix as the complete project.
CHAPTER 03
Why presentation is part of the music
Schmoop released a live-recorded visual performance for Afterglow made with digital video and animation tools. The accompanying notes say that three recorded takes were edited into the final performance. This matters because it connects the detailed studio approach to an attempt to make the presentation more than a static DJ clip.
His published show history includes the October 24, 2026 Red Rocks lineup with Jade Cicada, now a historical appearance, and an October 30 Brooklyn show with Detox Unit and others. These dates are useful editorial context, but their individual event records should be verified separately before receiving ticket buttons. Schmoop demonstrates how building a recognizable musical vocabulary can be as important as pursuing an instantly fashionable subgenre.
