CHAPTER 01

Two brothers with different underground histories

Overmono is the Welsh electronic duo of brothers Tom and Ed Russell, but their story did not begin with a newly invented stage name. Tom worked as Truss in tougher techno territory, while Ed, recording as Tessela, developed breakbeat-driven dance music. Both had already learned how to make records for rooms where rhythmic detail and physical impact matter.

Making music together allowed those experiences to meet. Overmono grew from individual club identities into a sound that combined broken percussion, elastic bass, vulnerable vocal fragments and unexpectedly warm harmony. The result can feel direct enough for a large festival while remaining intricate under close listening.

CHAPTER 02

From singles to the landmark debut

The pair released music together during the second half of the 2010s, eventually reaching much wider attention through tracks such as So U Kno. They brought the same vocabulary into Good Lies, their debut album released on XL Recordings on May 12, 2023. The album included Is U, Walk Thru Water with St. Panther, and the title track alongside a collection of rhythm-focused pieces.

XL’s release notes described an album shaped by years of touring and writing between shows. For the brothers, travel and shifting environments became sources of new ideas rather than interruptions to an ideal studio routine. Critics noted how the album balanced functional dance-floor pressure with melodies and edited vocals that created a stronger emotional narrative.

CHAPTER 03

Building a live act instead of just playing the records

Overmono’s performances became an important part of the project. The brothers adapted the music for live settings, turning material created in the studio into sets that could change from night to night. Their UK bass influences and sense of pace helped the show connect with both underground listeners and a wider festival audience.

The catalog kept developing through collaborations. In April 2024 they released a version of Turn The Page with The Streets, and the XL catalog also lists Gem Lingo with Ruthven, If We Ever with High Contrast and Paradise Runner in 2025. These recordings show how a duo can work with vocalists and other producers while maintaining a recognizable rhythmic identity.

CHAPTER 04

Pure Devotion and a dirtier studio sound

On August 7, 2026, Overmono released Pure Devotion through XL Recordings. The album included Lockup, Knight In Shining Prada with John Joseph Holt, Even Angels Ghost with Kindora and Gem Lingo featuring Ruthven. The label presented the record as an extension of their increasingly ambitious live show and more adventurous studio process.

The pair described intentionally experimenting with equipment, re-amping sounds through unconventional speakers and embracing imperfections instead of polishing away every rough edge. For young electronic producers, that is an unexpectedly practical lesson: technical control is valuable, but distinctive music often comes from listening carefully when a machine or an idea behaves in a surprising way. Overmono’s career makes room for both precision and accident.
