THE DJ HANGOUT / ARTIST PROFILE

NIKS

There are DJs who work on the next booking, and DJs who also work on the next generation of the scene. South East London's NIKS does both. A self-taught producer and selector, she draws on percussion-heavy UK club music, house and techno. Her work reaches beyond sets and releases: in 2020 she co-founded Black Artist Database, which grew from an effort to spotlight Black electronic artists into a community resource. Radio appearances and international festival bookings followed. The story is particularly relevant to DJs starting out in London: building a sound and building opportunity for other artists don't have to be separate careers.
