CHAPTER 01
The friendships that opened the door
A local music scene rarely begins with a headline artist. It begins with friends sharing records, inviting one another to rooms and showing up for the next party. Julian Maya describes that kind of introduction to electronic music in a June 2026 interview with TapeTrade. After becoming friends with St. Petersburg collective L8 Night Flights, he became increasingly absorbed in house and techno.
His story offers a view of St. Petersburg from the people who work inside its venues, not merely those who arrive for a single performance.
CHAPTER 02
Behind the booth and behind the venue
Maya worked at St. Pete Brewing Company and later managed The Nest, an independent venue connected to the city’s music community. That combination puts scheduling, artists, audiences and the realities of independent nightlife into the same story.
In his interview he describes being professionally involved with different corners of local music, from electronic events to punk, metal and other independent scenes. He sees the unusually close proximity of so many communities as part of what distinguishes St. Petersburg.
