THE DJ HANGOUT / ARTIST PROFILE

Haruka (Brooklyn)

Not every Brooklyn DJ needs to chase a global festival circuit to build a substantial career. Haruka, who began performing in Japan before moving to New York in 2006, built her reputation through local parties and venues including Bossa Nova Civic Club, Nowadays and Elsewhere. Her sets can move from house and techno to electro and unexpected influences without breaking the room's momentum. She has also helped organize events and collaborated across scenes. This Brooklyn-based Haruka is a different artist from Tokyo's Haruka; their separate profiles matter, because local history deserves the same accuracy as a famous name on a stadium poster.
