CHAPTER 01

Origins and the artist’s sound

Balkan Bump is the electronic project of trumpet player, producer and ethnomusicologist Will Magid. His musical training matters: the brass sounds in his recordings come from instrumental experience rather than from a superficial attempt to dress a generic club track in unfamiliar samples.

The project debuted with Aymo alongside Gramatik and Talib Kweli. Its 2018 debut EP appeared through Gramatik’s Lowtemp imprint, while later collaborations include CloZee and the late Gift of Gab. Electronic production, Balkan-inspired brass and hip-hop rhythm are recurring parts of the musical palette.

CHAPTER 02

Recordings and development

The recordings to explore include Aymo; Varshaver; Osmanity Remixes. These titles are grounded in the artist’s label history and are starting points for listening rather than claims about a current chart position.

Festival history includes Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lightning in a Bottle and Electric Forest. Those appearances show the music can work in several types of venue; brass arrangements and percussion bring live-performance possibilities that are less common in a conventional laptop-only DJ set.

Why the project matters

For the DJ Hangout, Balkan Bump offers a path from an artist biography into an instrumental network of collaborators and recordings. His project shows how the skills of a working musician can form the center of an electronic identity without confining that identity to one region or tradition.
