THE DJ HANGOUT / ARTIST PROFILE

Akua

Akua's techno has one foot in the future and the other planted firmly in dance-music history. The Ghanaian-American selector developed her reputation in New York clubs including Basement and Nowadays before relocating to Berlin. Her musical language draws from the machine-funk urgency of Detroit and the tougher edges of Chicago and New York, with little interest in fashionable shortcuts. Sets at Movement, Berghain, Dekmantel and FOLD show how well the approach travels. The interesting part is not merely how hard the records hit; it is the connection she makes between cities that shaped techno in the first place.
